Our Story

How it all started...

For more than 180 years, Waterville Baptist Church has been a place where the gospel has been faithfully proclaimed and lives have been transformed by Jesus Christ.
Founded in 1840 by Humphrey Posey, a missionary to the Cherokee Indians, Waterville Baptist Church began as a small congregation meeting not far from our present location. As the Waterville community grew, the church relocated to its current property, where it has remained a beacon of hope and faith ever since.
The history of our church is one of perseverance and God's faithful provision. In its early years, the congregation worshiped in a community schoolhouse before constructing its first church building. After that structure was damaged by a storm, a brick sanctuary was built to serve generations of believers. As the church continued to grow, God once again provided, and in 2005 our current sanctuary was completed, continuing the legacy of those who faithfully built before us.
Although some of our earliest records have been lost over time, one thing has never changed: our commitment to the truth of God's Word and the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. For more than eighteen decades, generations of families have worshiped, celebrated, mourned, served, and shared the hope of the gospel from this place.
Today, we are honored to continue that legacy. While we cherish our rich history, our greatest passion is not simply preserving the past—it is faithfully serving Christ in the present and pointing future generations to Him. We invite you to become part of the story God is still writing at Waterville Baptist Church.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)

Expanding the vision...

As God has blessed Waterville Baptist Church through the years, each generation has stepped forward in faith to prepare for the next. From a small congregation meeting in the 1840s, to the construction of multiple church buildings, to the completion of our current worship facility in 2005, every step has reflected a desire to provide a place where people can worship, grow, and serve.
Today, we continue to look beyond our walls. Our vision is to expand the reach of the gospel, invest in the next generation, strengthen families, and equip believers to impact our community and the world for Christ. We believe the church is more than a building—it is God's people, living on mission together.
"Honoring our heritage. Proclaiming the gospel. Reaching the future."

Where we are headed...

As we look to the future, our desire is simple: to faithfully follow Christ wherever He leads.
We believe God has positioned Waterville Baptist Church to be a beacon of hope in our community—a church where the Bible is preached without compromise, the gospel is shared with boldness, and people of every generation are encouraged to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our vision is to see lives changed by the power of the gospel, families strengthened by God's Word, and believers equipped to serve both locally and around the world. We are committed to investing in children and students, developing faithful disciples, supporting missions, and creating opportunities for every person to know Christ and make Him known.
While we are grateful for our rich heritage, we refuse to live in the past. We honor those who came before us by continuing the work they began—reaching people with the unchanging message of Jesus Christ in an ever-changing world.
We believe the best chapters of Waterville Baptist Church are still to be written, and we invite you to be part of what God is doing.
